Bruce Weber

Bruce Weber was born on March 29, 1946. He is an American photographer who is mostly a commercial photographer. He is most known for his photographs for Calvin Klein, the "underwear photos". His photos are also the black and white shots seen in Abercrombie stores nationwide. His background is in theatre and he briefly worked in film making and modeling before taking advice from Diane Arbus and studying under Lisette Model at the New School for Social Research. His first solo showcase at the Razor Gallery got him work with Glamour and GQ, respectively. He soon landed an editorial with Vogue in 1978. He's been in the National Portrait Gallery and Parco Exposure Gallery. He has a permanent collection at MOMA Paris.

He is most known for black and white photography, but at one point he did shoot a lot of color. When he could still get it, he preferred Kodachrome 25 due to the quality of the color emulsions. Now he prefers black and white due to the options he has with expressing emotion. He still shoots film almost exclusively. A lot of the golden retrievers that are in some of his shots are his own personal dogs, he owns six. Jane Goodall is one of his favorite people he has ever got to photograph.

I personally do not enjoy commercial photography. But his portraiture work with celebrities interests me because he tends to express the subject very well in the shots. The black and white lends itself to the emotion because you don't have the distraction of the color.

Volkswagon Abstract

I took this photo of a Volkswagon utility vehicle and edited it on Photoshop. I struggled in the beginning of editing it, but I really liked the finished product. I actually hit the posterize option and didn't know what it would do, but I like how that made it seem kind of like a painting almost.

Depth

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark"
Photographer: Michal (Beth) Freeman

I chose a portrait of my own titled "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark". My chosen subject was depth. I feel like this photo really illustrates the subject of depth through multiple reasons. It shows a foreground that's really in focus, while the mid and background are in varying levels of focus. The layers gradually blur as you look farther into the photo. The composition of the photo also lends itself to depth. The subject of the photo is walking into a darkened doorway making your eye follow the line of motion into the photograph. The black and white color scheme also gives the appearance of it slowly going in towards the center of the photograph. The outside of the doorway is white and then the photo becomes darker the farther in you look.

About Me

My name is Beth Freeman. I am an fine arts (studio) major. My focus is in glassblowing, and I intern at Tulsa Glassblowing School in the Brady District. My other loves in art are photography, watercolor painting, and collage. I love both digital and film photography. My first camera was a Minolta SLR, given to me by my grandpa, but I also have an obsession with TLR cameras. I also love to read, eat good food, bake, hike with my dog at Turkey Mountain, and pretend I know how to rock climb. I'm interested in photoshop because of my interest in photography, but I'm also interested in Illustrator from the artistic side of things.
